General American Airslide Covered Hopper

It looks like a boxcar, but it’s actually a covered hopper! Designed to haul bulk food ingredients like flour, starch, and sugar, General American Transportation Corporation manufactured these unique covered hoppers between 1973 and 1985. They featured 2 bays with 2 outlets each, along with a special patented “airslide” unloading system that used pressurized air to fluidize their contents by aerating the fabric lining of the bays. In modern times these cars have generally fallen out of favor relative to newer pressure-differential cars with larger capacities, but many can still be found on the rails, particularly in buffer service on trains carrying flammable liquid commodities.

The truck design on this model uses our bearing wheelsets for added performance and realism.
