Budd Cab car

Metra’s Budd cab cars were converted from gallery cars built by the Budd Company in the 1950s, designed to increase capacity with multi-level seating in the gallery cars and improve efficiency with control cabs in the cab cars. These innovations allowed trains to operate smoothly without needing to be turned around. After the creation of the RTA in the 1970s, Metra adopted these cars as a mainstay of its commuter rail fleet.

Since then, Metra has refurbished and modernized the cars, adding updated interiors and modern amenities while keeping their classic design intact. The Budd cars remain an essential part of Metra’s operations, continuing to serve as a recognizable feature of the Chicago area’s commuter rail system.
