AAR 2-Bay Offset Side Hopper

In 1935 the American Association of Railroads adopted a new 2-bay offset-side hopper car design. The design featured a larger interior capacity than a rib-sided car with the same outside dimensions, and the hope was that the ability to haul larger loads would offset the added expense to build it. These hoppers were built and sold all the way up until 1960, and were a common sight in both steam and diesel-era freight trains well into the 1970’s and as late as the 1980’s.

The truck design on this model uses our bearing wheelsets for added performance and realism.

The Reading decal sheet is enough to detail one complete car and was kindly provided by Cale Leiphart.

The New York Central decal sheet is enough to detail 3 complete cars.
